3rd of Desnus, 4715 (continued) 2nd “day” in the Remembrance.
The old crone had become a giant golden eagle and flew circles under the bridge before disappearing into the fog.
We stand on the lush floor of the large crystal cavern. The ceiling arches 160 feet above, with the bridge only 80 feet above the floor. The ground is covered in a perpetual blanket of fog some 3’ tall. The toadstools range from ankle-height to almost 6’ before their massive caps.
Shamus starts examining the massive creature that attacked me; probably in the hopes of getting alchemical components from its corpse.
While we were below, Menhir caught the shape shifting witch, and killed it as it was in golden eagle form. He waves at us from the top of bridge. He drops the eagle, and it becomes the shapeshifting witch as she dies. He then comes to us via the crystal walls.
Sif chops the shapeshifter witch’s head off while the rest of us are trying to check if she is truly dead.
Across the domed chamber is a door. We have Menhir open the door. Beyond the double-doors is a smaller crystal hallway. The floor is festooned with buds and clumps of toadstools. There’s not a lot of space to walk around them. Numerous flowery vines drape and grow over the area, filling it with a myriad of scents.
As we start down the twisting and crystal spear-filled corridor, the flowers of one of the mushrooms releases a thick powder that makes us drowsy. Being dwarves, we shake it off and continue. All but I fall to the spores as we try to make a run to the doors. Menhir and I make it to safety, after which I ask Menhir to fetch my sleeping comrades.
Meanwhile, the flowering bits jump from the walls and move to cover Tova, Ingrahild, and Sif.
I race in and kill one of the plants while Menhir races in and grabs Tova. The small tendril’ed beast flails at Menhir but he ignores it. Slowly, the fallen dwarves awaken.
When Tova awakes, she stands and has no problems moving away from the beast. Tira is still asleep, but Ingrahild picks her up. Shamus is slapped awake by Sif.
I move to the next plant and kill it. Tira does the same. The others fall to a new round of spores while Shamus makes his escape.
Shamus hits one with a splash of acid. Sif awakes and strikes mightily against one of these plants, pulping it. The creatures run up and throw more spores, , making many wooziness. We gather ourselves up and follow the hall as it curves downward.
Along the corridor, Shamus and Tira find word that the central chamber is the great terrarium while the middle one is the lesser terrarium, and beyond this set of doors is the deep terrarium. We decide to go in.
The smell of the room is quite overpowering. It’s a large arched chamber filled with a thick smell of decay that sickens Tira, Ingrahild and Shamus. They leave the chamber quickly. The mounds are a good 15-20 feet piled up and the floor is spongy under-foot. The fungus covers a thick hummus and decaying mass that chokes off any healthy plant from growing.
Shamus examines a creeping thorn vine, and suddenly the vines pick themselves up and attack us! As we move to defend ourselves and attack in return, another clump of vines atop a mound gathers itself together and attacks as well. We work together to avoid being surrounded. Sif is struck across the face by one of the vine creatures and goes into a frothing rage against it in return.
The first one is killed by Tova, Ingrihild and myself, trading blows against it. The second falls to Sif and my blows as Bauxite keeps it busy.
We move slowly to the next mound, but Menhir just jumps atop the mound and starts pulling up the vines. The vines coalesse and while Tova misses, Sif and Menhir do it immediate damage. Myself and Tova (and our legionnaires) rush forward to finish it off. Ingrahild rushes to the next mound, and once joined by Tir, the vines awaken. This beast is larger than the previous three.
Menhir gets smacked by it as he moves in. Ingrahild uses her war axe and handaxe combo to begin cutting it asunder. Tova and myself (after the previous one is killed) Tira all help kill it.
Our combat awakens a fifth that Tira attacks with her chain. When the larger one dies, we gather and concentrate on the fifth. Shamus deduces that the larger plant was the problem.
At the end of the room is a pith. As we get close I find it intriguing. I think it’s actually a lid to a shaft. It’s a construction of some kind. We spend a bit of time healing our hurts and taking a breath.
We start checking mysteries.
